Mr. Dent's Classroom Procedures

2020-2021

DAILY procedures during Virtual Learning:

  1. Check google classroom daily during YOUR class period. You need to be in google classroom during your assigned class time. This schedule will help you transition to in person school.
  2. Zoom meetings will be during the class time, so you must attend to get specific instructions about assignments. These will not be every day. But I will give you notice if we are going to zoom.
  3. Live instruction and recorded lessons will also be given. You will be notified on google classroom of any recorded lessons.
  4. Attendance is taken daily. Your attendance will be submitted through a google exit ticket in google classroom. Your exit ticket must be turned in by the end of the class period. If you turn in an exit ticket after your class period ends, you will be counted absent.
  5. Assignments will be submitted through google classroom the first 3 weeks. After that time or once other learning applications have been set up, you might submit work through a different platform, but only after I tell you and give you specific instructions.
  6. Have paper and pen every day to take notes during recorded/live lessons and zoom.
  7. If you need assistance during the day, please email me during the school day or send a message on google classroom. I try to reply immediately. Or within the hour.
  8. If you are absent from class, email me and you are still required to complete the work that is posted in google classroom.
  9. I can't reset your password in google classroom. Please use classLink for all applications through MISD.

Classroom Rules for in person learning:

  1. Be sure to wear a mask upon entering the classroom, it must cover your nose and mouth.
  2. Practice social distancing in the classroom.
  3. Be in your seat before the bell rings.
  4. Remain seated while in class in order to maintain social distancing.
  5. Once you're in the classroom, you're in. There will be no coming and going to walk the halls.
  6. Have paper and pen/pencil daily.
  7. Ask permission to leave the classroom.
  8. Phones are not permitted on classroom desks and must be put on silent mode. Your cell phone should be in your backpack, unless otherwise instructed by me.
  9. Do not talk while the teacher is instructing the whole class or another student is presenting to class.

**Remember, for the safety of your classmates and those around you, wearing a mask and keeping a safe distance is a MUST. **

Consequences:

  1. Warning
  2. Warning/conference with student
  3. Warning/conference with student/parent call
  4. Referral to office and parent call

Academic Integrity:

Cheating is not tolerated and results in a zero on an assignment. That includes major grades. Credit cannot be recovered on a zero for a major grade.

Turning in work:

Paper assignments must be turned into the proper class tray. You must include your full name on your work or credit is not given.

Major grade essays are not accepted after the due date.

Independent Reading:

Students must have a book daily. Students are expected to read 20 minutes or more a day. Student choice is encouraged when picking a book. Independent reading is assessed at the end of the six weeks through a reading prompt (an essay).

Student Illness:

Students will have one day to make up work for each day they are absent.

Major Grades:

Major grades follow the same pattern each six weeks.

  1. Essay grade
  2. Reading unit test
  3. Grammar/Revise and edit test
  4. Independent Reading Prompt (open response style)

Failing a major grade:

OUR ELA retest policy:

1.Essays cannot be redone within the six weeks. Essays are done in class to insure your child is doing what they need to do. Refusing to write is a behavior; that is an issue that will result in an office visit.

2.Grammar tests failures will be offered a retest. This will NOT be the same test as the original. Students must prepare and study for the retest.

3.Independent reading essays cannot be redone.

4.Reading unit tests failures will be offered a retest OR corrections based on the departmental decision of that particular unit. All teachers in 7th grade ELA will follow the same retest/correction policy on reading unit tests and it will be communicated to you and your student. Corrections and retests are a privilege. Teachers reserve the right to refuse retest or corrections to students that do not take advantage of remediation opportunities. Depending on the nature of the reading test, corrections or retests MAY not always be offered. Students are encouraged to study and use their daily quizzes to gauge the help and readiness for tests.

*Retest policy for certain students may vary based on IEP/504 accommodations.

Major Grades will not be substituted with an extra credit grade. All major grades count. No major grades will be dropped.

Daily Grades:

Many daily grades are given throughout the six weeks. Failure to turn in a daily grade will result in a zero. Late work daily grade is 10 points off each day late. After 3 days, no late work will be accepted.

Quiz Grades:

We usually give 3-4 quiz grades during the six weeks. Quizzes are usually announced, but pop quizzes may be given in efforts to prepare students for an upcoming unit exam. Vocabulary quizzes can be multiple choice or fill in the blank. If vocabulary is assigned as a quiz, students will have an entire week to learn words.

Respect for classmates:

Respect and kindness are expected in our classroom. Bullying of any kind is not tolerated and results in an immediate referral. Students are encouraged to communicate to the teacher any issue or concern.

Assigned seats:

Due to covid, we WILL have assigned seats this year. You are expected to stay in that seat unless I move you.

Substitute Teachers:

Substitutes are needed guests in our room. Any student that has his/her name left by a sub will get an immediate referral the next day to the office.

Food and Beverage in classroom:

No food is allowed in the classroom.

Water is acceptable at any time.

Please complete the google form stating you have read and understand the expectations of the classroom.

Thank you!
